The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed a joint five-point initiative by China and Pakistan aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East region.
In a statement issued on 3 April 2026 by Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, its spokesperson, the AU Commission described the initiative as a timely and constructive contribution to global efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
The Chairperson noted that the proposal’s focus on an immediate cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians, respect for international humanitarian law, and safeguarding maritime security aligns with critical priorities needed to contain the escalating situation.

Youssouf expressed deep concern over the continued instability in the region, warning that its impact is already being felt globally, particularly in Africa, through disruptions to energy supply chains, food systems, and broader economic stability.
He called on all parties to exercise restraint, pursue urgent de-escalation, and engage in sustained dialogue, stressing that adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter remains essential to maintaining global peace and security.
The AU Commission also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with international and regional partners to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing lasting peace in the region.
