The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic Birnin Kebbi Branch has rejected the controversial Scheme of Service for Polytechnics, citing discrimination against Higher National Diploma holders and erosion of gains made in the union’s battle against this practice.

The union has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the scheme or face various forms of industrial action.

In a press conference shortly after their congress meeting in Birnin Kebbi, ASUP Chairman Comrade Muzammil Mansur stated that they will not stand idly by while their members are discriminated against.

He said the purpose of the congress and the press conference was to endorse the resolution and affirm the union’s position.

In a resolution passed at the 110th meeting of the Union’s National Executive Council , ASUP expressed strong opposition to the scheme, claiming it entrenches discrimination against polytechnic graduates.

The union highlighted several provisions in the document that undermine the progress made in their battle against discrimination.

ASUP leaders also expressed concern over discriminatory entry points into the lecturer cadre for degree holders and HND holders, as well as discrimination against HND holders in the appointment of Registrars and Bursars, among other issues.
