The Abia State Government has approved the demolition and reconstruction of key facilities at the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba, in a move aimed at revitalising the state’s tertiary education sector.
The project, which will begin within the week, was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Mr Njoku Ukoha.
According to the statement, most of the existing buildings at the institution—many of which are more than 70 years old—have deteriorated beyond repair and will be pulled down to make way for modern academic and administrative structures.
Ukoha said the redevelopment forms part of Governor Otti’s broader plan to overhaul all state-owned tertiary institutions and address years of infrastructural neglect.
He explained that the college had long suffered from decaying facilities, which had negatively affected teaching, learning and overall campus life.

The College of Health Sciences project is one of several ongoing interventions across the state’s higher education system.
Ukoha said the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, has already been fully revamped, while Abia State University, Uturu, is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation and new construction.
He added that Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, has seen significant upgrades at its temporary campus, with major construction underway at its permanent site ahead of relocation.
Similarly, the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, is receiving large-scale upgrades and expansion.
Ukoha said the government’s education reform agenda is focused on restoring public confidence in state institutions, improving learning conditions, and positioning Abia as a centre for quality education and professional training.
