Following public outcry over the attack on protesting women in Kwara State by hoodlums at the gate of the State Government House, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has condemned the action, reasserting the right of peaceful protest.

A video went viral over the weekend showing some thugs attacking women protesting against the rampant bandit attacks and kidnappings of their family members for ransom in Kwara State.

Governor Abdulrahman, in a statement on Monday, said, “I am enraged at footage showing some hoodlums attacking women protesters near the under-construction Government House gate over the weekend.

“Peaceful protest is a democratic right. Assault on protesters is unacceptable, and that should never have happened.”

He said, “The protesters were within their rights to express their views. Our principles for the past six years encapsulate decency and respect for democracy, liberty, and order.

“I, therefore, distance myself from the incident as it does not represent our views as a government.”

The Governor has directed the Police to apprehend the attackers seen in the viral video, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to providing adequate security and flushing out criminals with the assistance of the newly inaugurated forest guards.

“I have requested the police to fish out the attackers and bring them to account.

“The government is clearly not resting on strengthening security in the state. Just on Saturday, December 27, I personally led the passing out parade of armed forest guards whose mandate includes flushing out kidnappers and terrorists from our forests, among other investments, to secure our communities. We are launching an offensive on the criminals.

“We urge understanding and support in the campaign against banditry and terrorism of any kind,” the statement concluded.
