FG urged to raise retirement age of medical personnel

The Federal Government has been urged to introduce a bill that will extend the retirement age of medical personnel, towards addressing shortage of staff at the middle cadre in government hospitals.

A consultant obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo in Ondo State, Lawal Oyeneyin made this submission at the scientific conference of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria in Akure.

The issue of impactful policy formulation and the need for medical personnel to take their rightful place in politics, were extensively discussed at the 9th scientific conference of the medical and dental consultants Association of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter.

Lawal Oyeneyin, a guest speaker from the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Ondo, emphasized the importance of addressing the emigration of medical professionals and medical tourism in Nigeria.

Using Ondo State as a case study, Oyeneyin listed promotion of personnel, flexible shift system and extension of retirement age of health workers, as some of the ways to ensure good health policy in the country.

On his part, the former majority leader of the Lagos state house of assembly, Jibayo Adeyeye said medical doctors need to show more interest in politics.

Other speakers, including representative of the state governor, Banji Ajaka, Commissioner For Health spoke on the essence of implementing good health policies for the people.

Others agreed that government should provide better welfare package for medical workers, to address brain drain in the health sector.
