Muhammad Bande emerges president of United Nations General Assembly

Nigeria’s permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Muhammad- Bande has been elected the United Nations General Assembly president.

He will be the 2nd Nigerian to hold the prestigious office of the UNGA president, after Ambassador Joseph Nanven Garba who held the position between 1989 and1990.

His election was a result of the rotational policy of the United Nations General Assembly as it was the turn of Africa to produce the next president.

Ambassador Tijjani Muhammad- Bande will be presiding over the 74th assembly billed to start in September, 2019.

A highly revered scholar and diplomat, he is a 1979 graduate of political science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
In 1981, he crossed over to University of Boston in the United States for his masters of Art in political Science, and in 1987 earned his Ph.D in political science from the university of Toronto.

His career as a scholar started in 1980 from the Usman Danfodiyo university, Sokoto, he became the Vice Chancellor of the same university in 2004 with stincts in various international agencies inbetween.

He was appointed the Director general of the National Institute for policy and strategic studies, Kuru, Plateau State,  a position he held until 2016.

Prof. Bande served as the 71st Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly in September, 2016
He has since served in various capacities at the United Nations General Assembly.

He was born in Kebbi State Nigeria on 7th December,  1957.

He has promised to implement the existing mandates and the agenda 2030 with focus on peace and security, poverty and education, zero hunger, quality education and climate change.
