The Speaker of the House of Representatives is hopeful the 8-month old strike embarked upon by University teachers will be over in a matter of days.
Femi Gbajabiamila expressed the optimism at the end of another meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Abuja.
In his closing remarks, the Speaker said the only issue to be resolved is the ‘No Work No Pay’ policy of the Federal government.
Responding, ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed gratitude to the Speaker and the leadership of the House for the intervention.
He said the leadership would take the resolution of the meeting to its members for their decision.
He however advised that industrial actions should not be allowed to linger in the interest of all parties and especially the students.
The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, has been on a protracted Industrial Action for over 7 months now and has despite several meetings between the Union and the Federal Government has not been able to come to an agreement on how to end it.
Students of Universities under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, have also joined in the move to bring the Strike to an end by holding protests across the Country in Strategic places including the nations’ major Airports of Lagos and Abuja.
The Federal Government has also taken the union to the National Industrial Court in Abuja with the Court deciding in favour of the Government directing the union to call off its over 7 month old Industrial Action.
The Union also went to the Court of Appeal with the Appellate Court deciding in favour of the Government directing the Union to call off the strike.
This meeting with the Leadership of the House of Representatives led by Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, is the latest in the series to bring both sides together and return students to the Universities and a resumption of academic activities.
