World Hand Hygiene Day: Medical Practitioners advocate for hand hygiene to curb infectious diseases

Medical practitioners of the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) have organised a campaign to advocate for proper hand sanitization to curb the spread of infectious diseases.

The campaign is part of activities marking the 2019 World Hand Hygiene Day.

Speaking during the event in Lafia the capital of Nasarawa State, the Coordinator of Infection Prevention and Control Unit  of the hospital Esther Audu, explained that this year was dedicated to fulfilling the slogan  “clean care for all, it’s in your hand”

The 5th of May every year is day set aside as Hand Hygiene Day by the World Health Organisation, to spread the message of Infection Prevention and Control, including hand hygiene which is critical to Universal Health Coverage.

The inability of persons to carry out this all important task according to the World Health Organization, has led to the deaths of 50,000 men, women and children yearly.

Some medical practitioners who spoke to TVC News have accepted the Hand Hygiene culture.

The World Health Organisation stipulates 5 moments of Hand Hygiene which includes; Before contact with a patient, after contact with a patient, before performing a clean/aseptic procedure, after body fluid exposure risk and after contact with a patient surrounding.
