It is Workers’ day today and special attention is being paid to the plight and welfare of workers across the world.
In Nigeria, organised labour is commemorating the event at the nation’s seat of power in Abuja and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is representing President Muhamamdu Buhari.
The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Another 100 years of Struggle for Jobs, Dignity and Social Justice in Nigeria’
As workers in the country mark the 2019 May Day, they want government at all levels to begin the implementation of the N30,000 new minimum wage.
General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Peter Ozo-Eson, says the organised labour will today formally ask all employers of labour to begin the payment of the new wage from this month.
Meanwhile the Peoples Democratic Party has hailed Nigerian workers for their service towards the stability and development of the country.
The party also warned workers to be productive and avoid complacency with the new N30,000 minimum wage recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
