The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has condemned the protest embarked on by some youths in Ibadan calling for the scrapping of the agency.
The protesters, who took the protest to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi carried several banners and placards with different institutions.
The youths also accused the Yanti-graft agency of carrying out illegal house searches, arrests and extorting suspected criminals.
Some of them claimed they were into legal businesses but the anti graft agency would still carry out arrests without presenting a search warrant.
While some of them called for the reform of the agency, some of them said they want it totally scrapped as they are only know for harassing innocent youth.
This development comes days after some youths held a similar protest in Warri, Delta State.
Reacting in a post through its verified Twitter handle, the EFCC said it will not be deterred by the smear campaign, adding that it will continue it’s campaign against all forms of economic and financial crimes
The anti-graft added that it will continue to locate, arrest and investigate anyone causing economic unrest in the country.
It said, “The EFCC’s mandate is to rid Nigeria of all forms of economic and financial crimes and will not be deterred by a mere campaign of calumny.
“Yahoo boys came out to protest because the eagle strongly detests their fraudulent interest but the EFCC will continue to do her best to locate, investigate and arrest anyone causing economic unrest.”
This spreading protest comes almost two years after a similar protest against the activities of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, a unit within the Police designed to fight violent crimes which later deviated from the Original aims of setting it up.
The unit was indicted in several episodes of Extra Judicial killings and arrest of alleged Yahoo Boys or Internet fraudsters.
The unit was later disbanded and replaced by the SWAT which has not yet properly taken off or accused of extra judicial killings though cases of Police brutality has not stopped.
