UN International Day of Happiness 2019: Happier Together
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Today is the UN #InternationalDayOfHappiness and it is celebrated on March 20 of every year. United Nations celebrates the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people, and to inspire and spread a global happiness movement.

Nigerians have slumped to the rank of one of the most depressed in Africa.

This is according to data from the world health organisation which shows that Nigeria has 7.1 million sufferers of depression, that is 3.9 per cent of the population.

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and in many cases, leads to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death in 15 – 29-year- olds globally.

According to W.H.O, Nigeria currently ranks 15th in the world for suicides.

This is a drastic shift from what obtained few years back, when Nigerians were ranked amongst the top five happiest people in the globe.

The theme for 2019 is ‘Happier Together’. In 2015, the UN launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that seek to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect our planet – three key aspects that lead to well-being and happiness.

The day is celebrated by all Member states of the United Nations.
