The Nigerian Customs Service says that it will prosecute anyone caught importing rice through the nation’s land borders and will confiscate the goods.
The deputy Comptroller, Ogun State Customs Command, Mohammed Gagiyo issued the warning while showcasing hundreds of bags of rice that were smuggled in thirty-seven vehicles along the Idiroko border area.
He noted with concern that despite the ban on importation of rice through the land borders, unwholesome cross border smuggling of rice still persist.
Hundreds of motorcycles used as means of conveyance by smugglers were also confiscated.
