Sokoto govt committed to support women journalists

Sokoto state government has assured of its commitments to work hand in hand with the National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ practicing for overall development of the state.

Alhaji Akibu Dalhatu, commissioner of information and orientation, made this statement while hosting executive members of the association at his office in Sokoto.

He expressed satisfaction with the rising number of women working in the state’s journalism industry and other fields.

Dalhatu said women journalists have contributed a lot to the development of communities especially in the area of awareness campaigns, advocacy and other interventions.

According to him, considering the role of women in the society, the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal allocated about 20% of different positions in his administration.

The Commissioner thanked the association for the visit and also appreciated them for recognizing the contribution of state government on women empowerment.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Sokoto State Chapter, Hajiya Rakiya Muhammed, congratulated the commissioner for his recent and well deserved appointment.

She said the association was set up to increased more access to women not only in journalism, but leadership and good governance.

She highlighted some activities of the association as improvement of less privilege standard of living, competition to encourage women practice journalism, scholarship and among others.

Muhammed said the association has now concluded all arrangements to organise a summit on peace and security in the state.

She solicited for the state government support to ensure effective implementation of the summit.

Rakiya Muhammed commended Governor Tambuwal for his determination and achievements recorded through provision of adequate attention to women and girls in the state.
