Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has resigned after the right-wing opposition won one of the country’s closest elections in history.
Magdalena Andersson handed in her resignation to the speaker of parliament on Thursday, paving the way for a change of government.
With more than 99 percent of the districts counted, the right-wing opposition was projected to gain 176 of the 349 seats in the Swedish parliament, in part due to a surge by the extreme-right Sweden Democrats (SD).
Speaking at a press conference, Andersson, the Social Democrats party leader, noted that it was a “narrow majority, but a majority nonetheless.
Never before in Swedish history has a government relied on the anti-immigrant and nationalist SD, which won the election by more than three percentage points.
The speaker is now expected to give the head of Sweden’s Moderate Party, Ulf Kristersson, a mandate to form a new government after Sunday’s general election, which gave the right-wing bloc a majority.
