Key stakeholders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Nigeria’s South East region are set to convene their first zonal engagement since the election of the region’s party executive committee on 24 February 2025.
The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Government House in Enugu, aims to address pressing issues affecting the party both nationally and within the region.
High on the agenda is the controversy surrounding the Supreme Court’s ruling on the position of National Secretary — a post originally zoned to the South East. There is growing concern among party leaders over the matter, with calls for the PDP to activate its internal conflict resolution mechanisms to resolve the impasse.
Once a PDP stronghold at the dawn of the Fourth Republic, the South East has seen a dramatic shift in political alignment. The party now retains control only in Enugu State. The All Progressives Congress (APC) governs Imo and Ebonyi, while Anambra has remained under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) since 2006. Abia State is currently led by the Labour Party.
The Enugu meeting is expected to serve as a critical forum for reassessing the party’s strategy and regaining lost political ground in the region.
