The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has once again demonstrated its strong dedication to youth empowerment and sustainable development by prominently representing Nigeria at the 2025 United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Heading the Nigerian delegation, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olubunmi Olusanya, addressed an international audience of youth leaders, policymakers, and development stakeholders, highlighting the vital role of inclusive youth engagement in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—especially in the areas of education, employment, innovation, and climate action.
In his remarks, Olusanya presented major national initiatives, such as the National Youth Development Strategy 2024–2028, digital training programs, green entrepreneurship projects, and key partnerships that have opened up opportunities for millions of young Nigerians.
He stressed that empowering youth is both a national priority and a global necessity, stating, “Nigerian youth are not just future leaders—they are today’s innovators and change-makers. Our commitment is to foster an environment that enables them to thrive and drive development on all fronts.”
As part of its engagement at the forum, the Ministry also organized a high-level side event in collaboration with UN bodies and African youth organisations.
The event, titled “Harnessing Youth Innovation for Climate Resilience and Green Jobs in Africa,” highlighted youth-led climate initiatives and encouraged policy dialogue between young leaders and decision-makers from across the continent.
The ECOSOC Youth Forum remains a critical space for young people to influence global development agendas and help advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Nigeria’s active presence this year reinforces its leadership in building a more inclusive and sustainable future for young people.
