An Oyo State High Court has sentenced Olaniyan Gbenga Amos, founder of the controversial Crime Alert Security Network, to 63 years in prison for defrauding investors of millions of naira through a fake investment scheme.
Amos and his company, Detorrid Heritage Investment Limited, were found guilty on nine counts of obtaining money by false pretences under Nigeria’s Advance Fee Fraud Act.
Seven years per count (to run concurrently), with orders to repay victims.
He was however cleared of 21 other charges due to insufficient evidence.
Prosecutors said Amos lured victims with promises of 30% returns in six weeks for investments in his security firm.
One victim, Bada Titilope, lost N995,000 (£500; $630), while another, Onifade Isaac Olawale, was defrauded of N920,000.
Trial Timeline
2021: Arrested by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
2022-2024: Trial featured eight prosecution witnesses and exhibits. Amos’s “no-case submission” was dismissed.
2023: Already serving a 75-year sentence for a similar fraud in a separate case.
2025: Two additional trials pending in federal court.
The EFCC estimates total losses from Amos’s schemes exceed N1 billion (£500,000; $630,000), affecting dozens of investors.
Justice Olusola Adetujoye emphasised restitution for victims.
The EFCC called the ruling a “strong deterrent” against investment fraud.
