The Kogi State Government says it will commit over four billion naira to promoting the well-being of the people of the state in line with President Bola Tinubu’s healthcare reforms.

Governor Usman Ododo disclosed this during the launch of a malaria prevention campaign to combat the prevalence of the disease in the state.

The World Health Organisation reports that Africa carries a significant malaria burden, with 246 million cases and over 569,000 deaths.

While children under five make up 76% of these fatalities in the region, Nigeria accounted for over 193,000 malaria deaths in 2023.

The vision of the National Malaria Strategic Plan is to reduce malaria deaths to less than 50, per 1000 births and achieve a parasite prevalence of less than 10% this year.

Governor Usman Ododo says this is why the Kogi State Government is investing over four billion naira in malaria prevention across its healthcare system in the state.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Health, alongside other critical stakeholders stated that the health sector is a major pillar of Kogi’s development agenda under the governor’s leadership.

A highlight of the malaria prevention campaign was the symbolic distribution of free drugs, insecticide-treated nets, and test kits across healthcare facilities in the state.
