The police have cracked down on members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria also known as Shiites in the Wuse District of Abuja.
The Shiites hit the streets in a religious procession from the Berger Junction towards the Wuse market area.
The procession degenerated into violence as the police fired teargas and shots to disperse the Shiites who now claim several of their colleagues have been killed and others arrested.
The violence caused the closure of the Wuse market.
A statement from the FCT Police Command said 2 police operatives lost their lives while several others sustained injuries.
Command spokesperson Superintendent of Police Josephine Addeh added that 3 police vehicles were burnt.
