The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Adamu Abdullahi, has disclosed the specific offenses, including breaches of data privacy, that led to the agency fining Meta Platforms and WhatsApp LLC.
Addressing the fines imposed on Meta Platforms and WhatsApp LLC, the outgoing chairman explained that the penalties were due to data breaches among other violations, emphasising the need for ongoing collaborative efforts to uphold these standards.
He made this revelation while answering journalists’ questions as he presented his scorecard following the appointment of a new FCCPC Chairman Olatunji Bello by President Bola Tinubu.
Established by Act No. 66 of 1992 (now FCCPC Act Cap C25, LFN 2004) and operational since 1999, the FCCPC has undergone various leadership changes, each bringing their own strategies and policies. In 2024, this trend continues.
Since January 2024, Acting Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, now outgoing, met with the press to present his scorecard.
Over the past seven months, Dr. Abdullahi and his deputies have engaged in numerous significant activities advocating for consumer rights.
Reflecting on this period, he described it as a rewarding tenure.
He warmly welcomed the new leadership under Mr. Olatunji Bello, stating that Mr. Bello is well-acquainted with the mandate of consumer protection.
