The Federal government has continued its efforts to educate the public on the effects of flooding and ways to mitigate it.

This commitment was evident as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conducted a sensitization and public awareness event on proper waste management and flood preparedness in Ekiti State.

The Head of Operations for Ekiti and Ondo, Mr. Koforola Shoneye, who represented the Director of the Agency Zubaida Umar at the event, explained that the sensitization programme was aimed at preparing residents for the NIMET predictions and the impacts of climate change.

He urged the community to refrain from dumping refuse in waterways to ensure the free flow of water.

The Deputy Governor, Chief Monisade Afuye, represented by the Permanent Secretary’s Deputy Governor’s office, Mr. Bayo Opeyemi, stated that the government has implemented measures to mitigate the effects of flooding in the state.

He encouraged people to avoid actions that could negatively impact society.

The Director General of the Ekiti State Waste Management Agency, Mr. Sunkanmi Onipede, noted that the agency is collaborating with other organisations to ensure the state remains unaffected by flooding.
