NBRDA DG affirms safety of genetically modified foods

The Director-General of the Nigerian Biotechnology and Research Development Agency has affirmed the safety of genetically modified foods, including Tela maize, dismissing contrary claims as misleading attempts to hinder national progress.

He made this known at the NBRDA headquarters in Abuja, when he announced the inaugural International Biotechnology Conference.

Biotechnology remains a hotly debated topic worldwide, with countries either embracing it fully or imposing strict regulations on its use.

In Nigeria, the federal government has warmly welcomed biotechnology and has been pushing it across key sectors such as agriculture, medicine, industrialization, and the environment.

According to the Director-General of the Nigerian Biotechnology and Research Development Agency, the upcoming biotechnology conference, scheduled from July 15th to 19th, will emphasize enhancing Nigeria’s food security.

The DG shared some details about the conference, including the display of Tela maize and innovations from other countries, showcasing a diverse array of biotech advancements.

The DG also addressed the issue of misinformation, urging the media to scrutinize their activities more critically before disseminating information to the public

This conference is anticipated to offer insights and recommendations for the application of biotechnology, with experts from various fields expected to attend
