King Salman of Saudi Arabia and his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have congratulated Massoud Pezeshkian on his victory in the Iranian presidential election.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Saudi king stated, “On the occasion of your victory in the presidential elections in the Islamic Republic of Iran, we are pleased to send you our sincere congratulations and best wishes for success.”

The crown prince added that Riyadh is “looking forward to continuing to develop relations between our two brotherly countries and peoples, and continuing coordination and consultations in order to enhance regional and international peace and security.”

King Salman also wished Iran “further progress and prosperity” during Pezeshkian’s stay in power.

Meanwhile, the Saudi crown prince extended his “sincere congratulations and best wishes for success and further progress” to Iran.

Bin Salman reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s desire to strengthen and deepen relations between the two countries and peoples, according to the Saudi news agency SPA.

Reformist candidate Pezeshkian defeated principlist Saeed Jalili in Iran’s runoff presidential election, campaigning on a platform of Western outreach as well as social and economic reforms.

Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon and longtime lawmaker, garnered 16.3 million votes to Jalili’s 13.5 million.
