Minister of water resources and sanitation, Joseph Utsev says that most of the flood incidents recorded so far have been flash and urban floods resulting from high rainfall combined with poor and blocked drainage systems in the urban areas.
He insists they are not from Dam releases as both Kainji and Jebba Dams on River Niger are still impounding water into their reservoirs and urges states and the public to take necessary measures to prevent the flooding challenges of the past years.
In the last 24 hours, some states have recorded high flooding including Lagos, some parts of Ogun state and the North.
This has been largely due to climate change and human induced environmental factors.
At a meeting organised to give an update on the flooding situation across the country, the minister of water resources and sanitation revealed that this will continue as predicted in April and river flooding is also expected to begin this month.
Some states likely to be impacted by the prediction of river flooding include: Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Benue, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, and Taraba.
The minister said there is no cause for alarm as the ministry is monitoring the development on the river Benue sub basin with wuroboki in Adamawa state where the flow from the upstream Cameroun is received.
He revealed that Shiroro Dam on river Kaduna is equally impounding water with no release of water yet from any of the Dams within and outside Nigeria.
