The United States Embassy in Nigeria has launched a training program for nearly 20,000 female journalists in six northeastern states on gender equality in the journalism industry.
The three-day training, designed to help women advance in their chosen careers, is being held in conjunction with the Organization for Innovation and Sustainable Development.
A large number of young women in Nigeria face societal barriers that prohibit them from participating in government and development.
In Northeast Nigeria, religion and tradition have put up hurdles preventing women folk to attain certain positions in their chosen careers.
Because of this development, the United States of America through her embassy in Nigeria, in collaboration with a non governmental organization are working hard to break these barriers.
This is the reason for flagging off the three day training for women journalists in the northeast region.
Declaring the workshop opening in Yola, the Executive Director Organization for Innovation and Sustainable Development (OISD) Jamilu Yusuf, commended the America Embassy for it’s involvement in the training of women journalists on gender equity.
He explained that the training will be extended to the six states in the region.
While the President of NAWOJ Ms. Ladi Bala commended the organizers for the training, she urged the participants to make best use of the knowledge they will acquire during the training.
Many speakers, including representatives from the American Embassy, gave more light on the benefits that such training will provide for women journalists.
The Initiative aims to develop female journalists in Nigeria’s northeast and promote gender equity in the media industry.
The theme of the training program title” SHE EXISTS: is promoting Equity, opportunities for women in Media”
