UN pledges support to Benue govt in fighting insecurity, resettling IDPs

The United Nations has pledged its support to the Benue State government in resettling the internally displaced persons across the state.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale, gave this pledge as he visited the State Governor,  Father Hyacinth Alia and IDPs Camp across the state.

Located along university of agriculture road in Makurdi, The Ichwa IDP camp houses over a thousand households as some have been here going on 6 years.

A hand made tent alone hosts up to 6 persons, placing the occupants at health risk from overcrowding.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, visited Idp camps across the state in company of the Benue state Governor,  Father Hyacinth Alia .

He is dissatisfied with the circumstances. finds the IDPs and considers the Benue IDP camps as the worst in the country in comparison to others.

Hyacinth Alia, had earlier received Mister Schmale at the Government House, Makurdi where he stated the UN’s readiness to collaborate with Benue State in three thematic areas.

Governor Alia disclosed that the total population of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state is about two million, one hundred and twenty-four thousand from 37,412 households of communities affected by farmers/herdsmen conflicts.
