NGO seeks more funding for climate change initiatives

Solutions to climate change issues have continued to take centre stage to ensure that it is tackled effectively to allow a safer and healthier planet.

Land degradation remains a major issue as more frequent extreme weather events keep affecting fresh water resources and the loss of biodiversity.

Like many other countries, Nigeria’s climate has been changing rapidly with the evident increase in temperatures, variable rainfall, rise in sea level and flooding, drought and desertification.

A non-profit organisation is seeking more funding for climate change initiatives on the African continent aimed to bring an end to the era of fossil fuels and create a world of community-led renewable energy.

This was the focus of a three-day training in Abuja for selected Nigerian journalists as part of the search for climate change solutions.

The urgency comes as the run up to the twenty seventh United Nations climate change conference (COP27) inches closer.

In all these changes, Nigerian environmental activists have continued to push for safer approaches towards ensuring that the nation’s environment is revived.

The training for journalists is simply to put across the need for effective communication strategies towards getting a clearer perspective while reporting on climate change issues

Facilitators believe that the training will help to push the need for the global north countries to deliver on their pledge in terms of fulfilling their promises for climate finance investment on climate change actions especially on the African continent.

Egypt will host this year’s Cop27, and as it approaches, experts are urging African governments to ensure that the focus lies on actions for countries to achieve sustainable transitions to cleaner energy and cities, renewable energy and reduction of emissions across all sectors in their various economies as well as proper adaptation measures.
