The Ondo state government has defended its compulsory registration policy for commercial and private motorcyclists, saying the policy is designed to reduce criminal activities in the state.

The state government had last year commenced a biometric registration for operators of motorcycles and tricycles, starting with Akure, the state capital.

The Senior Special assistant to Ondo state governor on special duties and strategy, Doyin Odebowale while addressing reporters in Akure, said only people who participated in the registration exercise will be allowed to operate in the state.

Odebowale who informed that the exercise has been extended to Owo, said this is done because of the porous nature of Owo.

He added that the exercise is not designed to generate revenue but to enhance security in the state .
