A terminal was submerged, flights delayed and travelers stranded following the burst of the water main at the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York City, the United States.
The water main burst in terminal 4 of the airport soaked passengers’ luggage and forced part of the terminal to shut down.
Hundreds of flights had earlier been delayed or even canceled when the winter storm “bomb cyclone” blanketed New York City, leaving thousands of passengers stranded in the airport.
One passenger said he had been trapped at the airport for four days.
According to the airport authority, though the burst might be weather-related, the exact cause is still under investigation as the built-in pipes have no anti-freezing protections.
