A military prosecutor in the Democratic Republic of Congo says that two “insurgents” will soon face trial for the murder of two U.N. investigators.
He denies that Congolese forces were implicated in the crime.
Military prosecutor, Odon Makutu told reporters in the capital Kinshasa on Saturday that the two suspects, Gerard Kabongo and a local chief, have been charged with the war crimes of murder and mutilation as well as terrorism, and participation in and command of an insurrection movement.
Makutu said fourteen other suspects are at large.
U.N. investigators were killed in March in Congo’s central Kasai region, where hundreds have died since last July in an insurrection against the government.
Rights group say they suspect Congolese forces could have been involved in the murders of the investigators who report to the U.N. Security Council on human rights abuses and sanctions violations.
