Prof Utomi threw this challenge at a two-day workshop organized by the Rivers state council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

The two-day workshop with the theme, The Nigeria Economy, performance, outlook and way forward according to the organizers is aimed at sensitizing members of the TUC on how to tackle the current economic situation in the country and ensure improvement.

The focus of the guest speaker’s lecture was on the impact of economic recession on the Nigerian worker and the role of industrial relations community. He noted that since Nigeria was experiencing its first recession in 30 years said there was need to diversify from oil into other areas.

Prof Utomi identified infrastructures as key for the Nigerian nation to graduate from a consuming one to production.

The Rivers state chairman of TUC said the lecture was organized to serve as a platform for experts to proffer solutions on how best workers can tackle the stress associated with the ongoing recession in the country.

The guest lecturer disagreed with those who are peddling the rumour that the on going recession would come to an end by December this year.

According to him, recession would only end when jobs and adequate food are provided for many Nigerians who are already traumatized.
