In Nigeria, out of pocket health expenditure rose from seventy one point five percent to seventy two point eight percent in 2020.

As a result of this, the world health organization is highlighting the need for government and society action to realign health systems towards quality, accessible, affordable and comprehensive primary health care.

More than nine hundred and ninety six million people spend at least ten percent of their household income on health care, leading many households into poverty.

 

Universal health coverage seeks to lift people out of poverty, promotes the well being of families and communities, protects against public health crises and moves towards achieving health for all.

 

This year’s theme, “Build the world we want: a healthy future for all”, seeks to emphasize the need for building stronger health systems, equity, trust, healthy environments, investments and accountability.

 

The primary health care system provides the strongest and most efficient foundation to achieve universal health coverage and health security across the globe especially in regions where health care has very poor indices.

Universal health coverage has pushed some countries to make strong commitments but implementation in most countries was fragmented and lacked an integrated approach leading to grave concerns about if the 2030 global target will be met.

At least half of the entire global population does not receive health services they need universal health coverage seeks to change this.

Health correspondent Kemi Balogun reports that this message formed the crux of the commemoration of the universal health day in Abuja.
