Image result for Power sectorThe Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives has queried the 2.7 trillion naira spent on the power sector between 2009 and 2015, without commensurate result.

Yakubu Dogara spoke at an interactive conference organised by the National Assembly, on the power sector.

National Assembly Correspondent, Joke Adisa reports that the present at the gathering were in agreement that adequate power supply remains an unavoidable prerequisite to any nation’s development.

The National Assembly says it is ready to provide legislative interventions that will assist in restoring sanity into the power sector, but it is worried that years of investments in the sector have failed to produce the desired results.

Key players in the industry are hoping the conference won’t go the way of numerous workshops that have failed to achieve meaningful results and government expresses its renewed determination to fix power in Nigeria.

For the Power, Works and Housing Minister, the many pending court cases, vandalism and lack of gas require stiffer penalties through amendments to legislation.

The consensus here is that government’s bid to diversify the nation’s economy and bring the country out of recession will not amount to much, if the challenges of the sector aren’t redressed.
