The Nigerian Customs Service is investigating the importation of two Bell Helicopters that were brought into the country without security clearance.
The seized Helicopters were handed over to the Nigerian Airforce at a ceremony in Lagos.
The Nigerian Customs Service says that the two Helicopters were imported through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
But, they were detained, when legal requirements for the importation were not fulfilled.
The Customs decision to effect seizure of the consignment was prompted by findings which revealed that the importation contravened guidelines that bordered on national security.
The Nigerian Customs Service and the Airforce believe that that there is need for high security alerts at this time when terrorism and criminality are crippling the national life.
The duty paid value of the two helicopters is more than nine point seven billion naira an equivalent of thirty one point nine million dollars.
