Nigeria is loosing millions of dollars as a result of illegal poaching activities in its Waters.
In an observation on the sidelines of the Lagos International Maritime Summit Margaret Orakwusi, former chairman of the Nigeria fishing trawler Owners Association assert that foreign vessels continually pollute the marine environment Services.

At the 2022 International Maritime Summit, participants discussed a variety of topics including the sustainability of Nigeria’s blue economy and reducing emissions.
Beyond these discussions, International attention is being drawn to the continued trend of poaching, and illegal fishing by foreign vessels in Nigerian Waters.
“We have called once again international attention to IUU and that is irresponsible undocumented unregulated fishing activities being carried out by the big countries with their big vessels, and they come in such an irresponsible manner, they depletes our body juveniles, both the old ones that lady golden eggs, industrial fishing is highly regulated but they don’t care,” Orakwusi stated.
According to her, proficient practices violate International best practices and harm the environment and she wonders if there is a conspiracy to keep silence on the matter.
She said as a result of fish poaching by Foreign vessels, Nigeria and other African countries lose billions of dollars annually as well as employment opportunities.
