TVC E. The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned the state coordinator of the Nigerian Volunteer Corps, aka N-Power, over the non-verification of members in the state chapter.

N-Power is a programme designed by the Federal Government to reduce youth unemployment by equipping graduates and non-graduates with the skills and tools needed  to enable them to secure employment, entrepreneurship and innovation.

The issue was raised by the Chief Whip, Rotimi Abiru, under matters of urgent public importance.

Abiru, who called the attention of other lawmakers to the plight of some aggrieved members of Lagos N-Power, who had stormed the assembly earlier, decried the attitude of the Federal Government to the plight of the protesters.

The protesters had claimed that Lagos members were barred from work, which they ought to have resumed since last month, adding that they had been denied benefits due to them.

Another lawmaker, Tunde Braimoh, representing Kosofe Constituency II, said he was sad that the programme, which was initiated to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerian youths, was being used otherwise.

The representative of Shomolu Constituency I, Rotimi Olowo, said, “The treatment infringed on the fundamental rights of Lagos youths. The House should set up an ad hoc committee to look into the matter.”

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, said an investigation into the allegations was in order.

He said, “I hereby direct that a thorough investigation be carried out to know the agency of government that interfaced with the N-Power project and reasons behind the exclusion of Lagos youths from work and benefits.”
