There have been calls for the sacking of the Minister for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq, as reactions continue to trail her comments on the Flood situation in Bayelsa.
A recent comment by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, has stated that from an assessment carried out so far by the ministry, Bayelsa is not among the top ten most affected states by the recent floods, instead, Jigawa is ranked the number one most-hit state, has sparked off reactions from some stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
The Ijaw Youth Council, in a press briefing held by its spokesman, Ebilade Ekerefe, faulted the minister’s statistics and called for her immediate sack by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Some key players including the president of the INC, as well as the chairman, of the Traditional Rulers council in Bayelsa State, also lend their voice on the matter.
Statistical data from The Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency shows that a total of 1.3 million persons have so far been directly affected by this year’s ravaging flood in Bayelsa State, with 96 deaths recorded.
The Federal Government has been urged to focus more on the restoration of broken infrastructures as well as the reintegration of displaced persons as states affected are counting their losses while looking forward to the process of rebuilding.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq, was recently reported to have have said Bayelsa State was not one of the most affected States in the rampaging floods that has ravaged over 26 States across the Country.
Since her reported comments, the backlash has been swift, with first members of the National Assembly form Bayelsa State calling for her sack describing the comments as ill advised and insensitive.
Other Stakeholders have also been calling for her sack over the issue, with this from the Stakeholders in Bayelsa State the latest in the growing calls for her sack.
