Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about his rise in the music industry, revealing that he has been winning awards since he joined Mavin Record.

The 25-year-old singer made the revelation while collecting three honors at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) ceremony on Sunday.

“Since I was 19, since I got to Mavin. I’m 25 now, I don dey old oo. But yeah, it’s beautiful to be here again and still getting an award, seven years in the game. I really appreciate it. Shout out to AFRIMA. One love,” Rema said during his acceptance speech.

The Benin-born artist, signed to Mavin Records from the age of 19, shot to fame in 2019 with hit tracks like Iron Man and Dumebi, quickly becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated musicians.

His international breakthrough came with the 2022 single Calm Down, featuring American singer Selena Gomez.

The remix became a global sensation, topping charts in several countries and earning him worldwide acclaim.

At the AFRIMA ceremony, Rema took home Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, Artiste of the Year, and Best African Artiste, Duo or Group in African RnB/Soul for Calm Down.

He triumphed over leading Nigerian stars including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, and Asake in the Best Male Artiste and Artiste of the Year categories.

On the same day, the Calm Down crooner visited his childhood neighbourhood and church in Benin, Edo State, accompanied by his mother.
