The Niger state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello has once again appealed to the government for more military intervention to quell the lingering insecurity challenges in the state.
The governor made this plea while hosting the management of the national institute of policy and strategic studies at the government house in Minna
He confirmed that some communities have completely been overrun by bandits despite efforts by the military to smoke them out. But he hopes that a heavy military presence will put the bandits to flight and give the people confidence to return to their communities.
This year. the National Institute of policy and strategic studies is focusing it’s research and policy development on industrialization, energy security and climate change as directed by President Buhari .
With the presence of four hydro electric power dams, Niger state is strategic to meeting Nigeria’s energy needs
Unfortunately, houses and farmlands are consistently washed away by floods during rainy seasons due to the overflowing of water from the dams.
Governor Bello insists that the state has not been adequately supported to mitigate the effect of these floods and the institute should consider such situations in formation of its policies.
The national institute of policy and strategic studies was established during the military administration in 1978 to develop policies and strategies for implementation on behalf of states across the country towards a better Nigerian society making it Nigeria’s highest think tank.
Director General of the institute professor Ayo Omotayo says studies have revealed that vast ungoverned spaces in Niger state has contributed greatly to the spate of insecurity which is why the state was selected as one of the 7 states to be considered as case studies in developing policies that will address energy and ungoverned spaces in Nigeria.
Niger state is the largest state in Nigeria with 76,000 square kilometres.
With such vast land mass, the institute believes if the solutions it has provided is applied, it will be able to address the issues in the state, the problem of ungoverned spaces across the country.
