The Zamfara State governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 General election Dr. Dauda Lawal, has condemn in totality the attack on members of the party and his supporters by political thugs.
Dr. Dauda described the attack as the height of lawlessness, brigandage, and provocation capable of heightening tension in the state
Supporters of the ruling All Progressive Congress APC and the main opposition party in Zamfara clashed on Friday during a welcome home rally for the PDP Governorship Candidate
The Incident Happened near the residence of the PDP Governorship Candidate in Gusau GRA
One person was said to be killed, several sustained injuries while a vehicle was set ablaze
A statement issued by Dauda Lawal Media Centre in Gusau alleged that it’s Governorship Candidate and his supporters were attacked by armed Political thugs
The statement adds that the incident was Unfortunate especially now that electioneering Campaigns ahead of the 2023 General election has commenced in earnest
“We are in a critical time. Unfortunately, we found ourselves in this mess. We thought thuggery and hooliganism had become a thing of the past in the state, but it has been resurrected” the statement reads.
“The Peoples’ Democratic Party has been known to be law-abiding, we are a party that strictly works and abide by the law of the land and that is the reason we waited for the electoral umpire the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to lift the ban on the governorship campaign before organizing any politically related activity in Zamfara”
“The PDP has fixed today October 15th as a day to receive thousands of APC decampees to the PDP as well as to inaugurate the 2023 governorship Campaign Council, but this happened few hours to the event” it’s highly unfortunate.
The people’s Democratic Party is accusing some sponsored Political thugs of creating the problem by attacking it’s members and Supporters
“Our entourage was attacked while on our way to Gusau, by Suspected sponsored thugs and Many of our vehicles were smashed and burnt during the attack”
“Twenty four hours later, another team of Political thugs led by a serving Government official attacked the residence of the PDP Governorship candidate in Gusau GRA” They alleged.
“The thugs barricaded the road leading to Dauda Lawal’s residence and venue of the gathering with two vehicles, setting up a parameter for the attack and they used deadly weapons on our supporters and our campaign buses were vandalized and looted”
“We know the Government and ruling party in the state intends to use all available means to unlawfully stop us from our Campaign ahead of next year’s Election, it is an issue of great concern to all well-meaning and peace loving citizen”
The wide acceptance and popularity of the PDP and it’s Governorship Candidate Dauda Lawal is the reason the ruling party has resorted to creating violence, the PDP said.
” Says is in tandem with its Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election campaign by political parties as provided in Section 94 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022. That no state governments should prevent other political parties from campaigning in their domains.”
Responding to the allegations, the ruling All Progressive Congress in Zamfara denied the allegations and accused the PDP of Launching attack on its supporters and innocent citizens.
A press statement signed by its spokesperson Yusuf Idris Gusau said the incident left one person dead and several others injured
“It is highly disheartening and worrisome the attack with firearms perpetrated by PDP thugs on innocent youths who were carrying out their monthly sanitation work in GRA area of Gusau”
“The dastardly act left one person dead and several others wounded and are currently receiving treatment at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau” Yusuf said.
The victims were attacked because they are APC supporters and as a party and also as a government we will not allow this matter to rest, because these criminals are trying to bring into the state capital what we have always accused them of doing at the fringes.
“While we are calling for calm on the good citizens of the state who were angered by the PDP thugs and yearning for retaliation, we wish to call on both the state government and security agents to urgently fish out the culprits and bring them to book to prevent reprisals” He said.
The Clash between Supporters of the two major Political parties in Zamfara has created tension in the state especially Gusau, the state Capital.
This Unfortunate incident is coming a few days after the official commencement of Political campaigns ahead of next year’s Election.
