Lawmaker, Ex-Internationals call for focus on grassroots Sports

Sports Development: Lawmaker, Ex-Internationals ask Govt. to focus on grassroots Honourable Shina Peller and the Ouwo of Iwo Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi at the kick off of the Final of the Peller Unity Cup

Government and relevant stakeholders have been urged to focus more on grassroots sports development in order to discover more talents and to engage the youths positively through sports.

A member House of representatives Shina Peller and some former super eagles stars made this appeal during a football competition held at Iseyin, Oyo state.


The increasing rate of restiveness amongst young Nigerians leading to various forms of social vices such as political thuggery, drug addiction, cultism and terrorism has become a major challenge in the country.

For this reason, Stakeholders’ have identified positive youth engagement as a way of reducing such vices in the society and sports has been identified as one of the major tools of engaging the young Nigerians.


This is Iseyin in Oyo state and it’s the annual Peller Unity cup organised to engage the youth, unite their communities and to develop talents.

The lawmaker described football as a universal sport that can be used to unite people.


Some of the ex internationals at the occasion want government and relevant stakeholders to invest more resources in talents discovery and development.

The football match featured Iseyin United VS Iseyin City with a 1 nil defeat against Iseyin city while Itesiwaju Rangers lost 2-3 against Itesiwaju Lions FC.
