Twenty-three Directors of Works in the twenty-three local government areas of Sokoto state are currently receiving supervisory skills and team-building training from the Industrial Trust Fund, Sokoto Area office.

The ITF Area Manager, Dauda Mshelizah says the training will ensure effective service delivery by empowering local government personnel with the requisite skills to engender development at the grassroots.

Aside from being the vehicle for political education and mobilisation at the grassroots, it also provides a platform for people to feel the impact of government, make their voices heard and their pulses felt.

But the various reforms in local government administration in Nigeria, has not reflected in provision of essential services in the local governments that will translate to sustainable development at the grassroots.

A lot of factors are attributed as responsible for this including the lack of motivated manpower with requisite skills to engender development.

Despite the Buhari Administration’s efforts to address this, it is said that the local government’s lack of financial autonomy is to blame for this situation.

To change this negative narrative, the Industrial Training Fund is training twenty three directors of works from the twenty local government areas of the state.

Participants are expected to acquire skills that will improve their ability to provide information on rural resources, deploy technical assistance; sensitize potential volunteers and donors as well as focus on people’s needs and basic amenities.

The selected directors are expected to lead their team at their various local councils to achieve effective project implementation and management to ensure citizens at the grassroots feel the impact of government.
