The European Union has approved a speed limit technology that will deter speeding as well as data recorders to document the circumstances of accidents.
Speed limiting technology will become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from 2022.
After new rules were provisionally agreed by the European Union, the Department for Transport said the system will also apply in the UK, despite Brexit.
Road safety charity Brake said it’s a landmark day; adding that the move will save thousands of lives.

Safety measures approved by the European Commission included intelligent speed assistance, advanced emergency braking and lane-keeping technology.
The EU says the plan will help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 and cut road deaths to zero by 2050.
