Illegal oil deals : Appeal court upholds imprisonment of 14 foreigners

The Court of Appeal, in Lagos has upheld the two year’s imprisonment imposed by the Federal High Court in Lagos on 14 foreign nationals.

They were convicted for illegally dealing in more than one million metric tons of petroleum product in 2015.

The convicts, identified as citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Philippine and Japan,
were convicted alongside their vessel, MT Anukt Emerald, and two companies – Monjasa DMCC, and Glencore Energy UK Ltd.

Justice Ibrahim Buba convicted the foreigners on five counts and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment in 2016 each starting from when they were arrested by the Nigerian Navy.

The judge, gave them the fine option of paying 5 million naira instead of going to jail
