President Zuma quits May Day rally after backlash from crowd

South African President Jacob Zuma made a hasty exit from a May Day rally on Monday after the crowd of workers he was due to address became rowdy.

The labour federation, COSATU abruptly cancelled Zuma’s speech and other addresses at the rally it had organised.

Scuffles had broken out in the crowd, apparently between supporters who voiced their backing of Zuma and opponents of the President.

Last month, COSATU, a key political ally of the ruling African National Congress, called on Zuma to step down.
