Four hundred National Youth Service Corp members have been mobilized to champion the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Presidential Aide on SDGs, Adejoke Orelope –Adefulire, while launching the NYSC/SDG Champions project at the NYSC Orientation camp, Keffi Nasarawa state
Tai Amodu reports that one major drawback in the implementation of the Millienium Development Goals, was the inability of communities to take ownership of MDG projects sited within their domains
It is a failing the present Presidential Aide on SDGs is hoping to overcome by making Corp members mouthpieces of the SDGs project to the communities.
The 40 youth corp members being inducted into the programme at this launch are the first batch of youths mobilized to champion the actualization of the SDGs and are to undergo a five day training prior to being deployed
The Presidential Aide discloses that though the country made appreciable progress in the implementation of the MDGs there are some goals that were not fulfilled which have been rolled over into the SDGs
On his part Director General of the NYSC says the SDGs programme, is a universal call to end poverty, hunger and gender inequality as well as a design to promote healthy living and economic growth among Nigerians
He notes that Corp members have participated in Development Programmes since 2006 and will serve as the eyes and ears of their communities of service, for the overall development of the country
The SDGs is the blueprint of the United Nations’ current global development agenda aimed at ensuring a world free from poverty and deprivation.
The vision was endorsed by 189 nations in New York in September, 2015.
