The Enugu State Police Command says two men have been arraigned in court for allegedly stabbing and killing a student during a bonfire event at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
The suspects — Ezema Onyedikachi, 27, and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony, 21 — were charged with conspiracy and murder over the death of 29-year-old Nweze Chiebonam.
They have been remanded in correctional custody.
Police said the incident occurred after a bonfire organised by the Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology/Heritage Studies on 12 September 2025.
At about 3 a.m. the following day, as attendees were leaving, a minor accident occurred between the vehicle of one of the suspects and that of the deceased, sparking a fight that was initially resolved.
According to investigators, the suspects later conspired, armed themselves with a dagger and returned to attack Chiebonam. In the course of the assault, Onyedikachi allegedly took the dagger from Anthony and stabbed the victim fatally in the chest.
He was rushed to hospital but confirmed dead by doctors. Police recovered the dagger used in the attack.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa described the incident as “unfortunate and avoidable” and commiserated with the victim’s family.
He urged young people to shun violence, exercise self-control and resolve disputes peacefully.
